Alan David Mendenhall

Alan Mendenhall, age 84, passed away Monday, November 24, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Bayview Freeborn Funeral Home. Reverend Kent Otterman will be officiating. A visitation will be held for two hours prior to the service.

Alan David Mendenhall was born July 16, 1941, in Windom, MN to Gordon and Ann (Noy) Mendenhall. He grew up in Vernon Center, Minnesota and graduated from Garden City High School in 1959. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota, earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1966. On June 29, 1963, Alan was united in marriage to Donna Mae Nibbe in Vernon Center, MN. The couple moved to Freeborn after Alan Graduated in 1966 then into Albert Lea in 1967 where Alan worked for the Albert Lea Veterinary Clinic in a mixed practice. In 1985, he began a dairy practice from home, working from his vet truck. After retiring in 2000, Alan and Donna spent 19 Winters in Tucson, AZ, moving back to Freeborn in 2005.

Alan was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, president of the Freeborn Area Heritage Society for 15 years, and he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he was the Grand Knight in 1996. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, photography, fishing, deer hunting, bowling, golf and cribbage. He especially loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed going to Holland to visit them and made a special trip to Sweden to pick up his Volvo with Mike.

Alan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna; sons, Michael, David (Renee Carlson), Daniel; three granddaughters, Addison, Aviana, Zaylie; brothers Lee, Tom; sisters, Jean Teaser, Joan Tallman; many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Ann; in-laws Bill and Mabel Nibbe; daughter-in-law, Brooke.
