Dennis Lowell Mattson

Dennis Lowell Mattson of Alden, Minnesota, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at his farm. He was 72 years old.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at Bear Lake Concordia Lutheran Church Albert Lea, Minnesota. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bear Lake Concordia Lutheran Cemetery Albert Lea, Minnesota. Pastor Lou Peters will officiate. A luncheon will be served after the service. Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, MN, has been honored with assisting the family.

Dennis Lowell Mattson was born on March 9, 1954, at Naeve Hospital to Melvin and Gertrude (Helland) Mattson. He grew up on the family farm near Alden and graduated from Alden-Conger High School. On September 29, 1973, at East Freeborn Lutheran Church, he married the love of his life, Nancy Stadheim. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and farming and were blessed with three children: Michael, Melissa, and Michelle. Dennis generously gave his time to his church and community, serving on the church council, as a 4-H leader and softball coach, and Luther League in his earlier years. He also enjoyed helping decorate the church for Christmas and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed, whether at the church or school. He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, especially taking his pickup for a daily drive to check the crops and cattle, spending time fishing and hunting, and attending every event he could for his children and grandchildren. He was always willing to serve as a “taxi driver” for his children and grandchildren and rarely missed his men’s breakfast gatherings.

Dennis enjoyed his time in the tractor and spent many hours on the farm with Daryl, Dean, Michael, and Brett. Each morning, Dennis would check on the cows and crops. He always had an abundance of love for the farm, animals, and wildlife. Dennis would scout out where the deer, turkeys, and pheasants were located during his morning drive.

Vacationing and exploring were another one of his favorite hobbies. The annual trip to Crane Lake spent with family will never be forgotten. Boating, fishing, swimming, fish fries, family time, and just being together were what he loved the most. He enjoyed cruises with his wife, as well as hunting and fishing trips with his buddies. Dennis always looked forward to the Super Bowl gatherings with his good friends.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nancy; children: Michael (Kari) Mattson, Melissa (Erik) Wasmoen, and Michelle (Sam) Hintz; grandchildren: Malory (Blake) Heideman, Madison and Macy Mattson, McKenzie, Andrew and Ali Wasmoen, Parker, Ryan and Emily Hintz; brothers: Daryl (Sharon) Mattson, and Dean (Linda) Mattson; sisters: Elaine (Jerry) Jahnke and Eunice (Gary) Newman; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Charles (Nancy) Stadheim, Ron Stadheim, Denny (Mary) Jensen, and Jon (Sandy) Larson; and by other loved ones.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Gertrude Mattson; his parents-in-law, Stanley and Arlean (Babe) Stadheim; his sister-in-law, Julie Stadheim; his niece, Evon Lyle; and his niece and godchild, April Sorensen.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the Conger Fire Department, Bear Lake Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, or to the donor's choice.
