Ione Katherine (Tapp) Callahan of Albert Lea, MN, peacefully passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Prairie Senior Cottages in Albert Lea. She was 99 years old.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea with visitation one hour prior to the service. Father Kurt Farrel will be officiating. A Luncheon will follow the Memorial Service. Interment will be in the St. Theodore’s Catholic Cemetery in Albert Lea. Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, MN, has been honored with assisting the family.
Ione Callahan was born on May 11, 1927, in Pine City, Minnesota, to Harold and Anita (Manes) Tapp. She grew up in Brownsdale, MN. Ione attended and graduated from Austin High School. On February 13, 1947, Ione was united in marriage to Nicholas James Callahan in Albert Lea. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to laugh and was known for her wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed dining out, traveling, and making memories with family and friends. She had an incredible knack for winning pull tabs and Bingo, often leaving others amazed by her good fortune. One of her greatest joys was dancing with Nick, creating cherished moments that will be remembered with love. Ione had a love for reading and embroidery, and she enjoyed the beautiful items she crafted. She especially enjoyed being with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. May perpetual light shine upon her.
She is survived by her children: Jim Callahan, Rose Ann (Rodney) Olson, Ilene (Terry) Hammond, and Marie (Tim) Marden; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other loved ones.
Ione was preceded in death by her parents; husband Nicholas (2001); daughter Sharon (Groe) Callahan (2000); grandson Cory Vanderwoude (2002); and daughter-in-law Mona Callahan (2021).
