Marie W. DeRaad

June 9, 1906 — April 17, 2005

Marie W. DeRaad was born on June 9, 1906, in Nijverdal, Netherlands, the daughter of Henry and Alice Kortman Flim. She came to the United States with her family in 1918, settling in Sioux Center, Iowa. In the early 1920's they came to Hollandale. Marie went to school in Sioux Center. On June 8, 1934, Marie was united in marriage to John DeRaad in Hollandale. He preceded her in death in 1988. Marie was a member of the Hollandale Reformed Church where she was active in the Mary Martha Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, and baking. She was especially known for her Almond Bars and for speaking "Yankee Dutch." Survivors include her children Jean and her husband Gerrit Molenaar, of North Mankato, and Henry and his wife Beverly DeRaad of Owatonna; her grandchildren Jerry, Larry, and James Molenaar, Rebecca Schertler, and Jay DeRaad; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her sisters Dena Flim and Alice Flim, her brother John Flim and his wife Sybil, and her nephew Helge Flim.
