Merle Oren Andresen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, and friend, passed away on October 10, 2026, at the age of 86. A memorial service will be held at Bayview Freeborn Funeral Home on Friday, October 23, 2026 at 1 PM with visitation to be held for an hour prior. Father Kurt Farrell will be officiating.
Family was everything to Merle. He was a kind, loving, caring, and compassionate man who believed in showing up for the people he loved. Whether it was a family gathering, a birthday, a holiday, or any special occasion, Merle could always be counted on to be there. His presence was a constant in the lives of those he loved, and his willingness to lend a helping hand extended far beyond his family. If someone needed help, Merle was always willing to do what he could. His love was shown not just through words, but through his actions, his generosity, and the time he gave to others.
Merle was a hardworking man who built his life through dedication, determination, and perseverance. As a young boy, he began working by delivering newspapers before being hired as a gas station attendant. He later entered the masonry trade, where he developed his skills and eventually started his own business, A&H Masonry. His strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were a reflection of the man he was.
When health issues arose in his fifties, Merle adapted to life's challenges by returning to school to study mechanical drafting. His ability to find a new path when circumstances changed was another example of his determination and resilience.
After years of hard work, Merle retired early and embraced a new chapter of life as a snowbird. For approximately 20 years, he enjoyed spending his winters in Texas and Arizona, escaping the cold and enjoying the warmer weather. This chapter of his life brought him the opportunity to relax, enjoy his retirement, and make memories along the way.
Merle had a love for the outdoors and adventure. Over the years, he enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, and riding motorcycles. These activities brought him enjoyment and countless memories throughout his life.
He was also an active member of the Eagles Club and a member of St. Theodore Catholic Church, both of which were important parts of his life and community.
Above all, Merle treasured his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Darlene; his daughters, Lisa Olson, Julie (Chad) Hammer, and Shelly (Brian) Zwirner; and his beloved grandchildren, Shanna Andresen, Jessica Johnson, Travis (Isabelle) Johnson, Randy (Lorelei) Peterson, Brandon (Megan) Peterson, Christian (Tracy) Vokoun, and Jayden Hammer.
He is also survived by his sisters, Clarine (Floyd) Wallace, Beth (Dave) Breamer, and Thelma (Charlie) Niebuhr; his brother-in-law, Jerry Bohlsen; and his sisters-in-law, Joelle (Charlie) Schaefer, JoAnn (Randy) Hinders, Janee (Frank) Boever, Julie Holland, and Joyce (Will) Shauberger.
Merle was preceded in death by his parents, Einar and Olivia Andresen; his parents-in-law, Albert and Bernadette Bohlsen; his brother, Erwin Andresen; his brother-in-law, Mark Holland; and his sister-in-law, Janet Bohlsen.
Merle's greatest legacy was not measured by the years of hard work or the business he built, but by the love he gave, the people he helped, and the family he treasured above all else. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories, lessons in kindness and perseverance, and a love that will continue to live on through the people whose lives he touched.
Though his family and friends will deeply miss his presence, Merle will never be forgotten. His family will carry him in their hearts, remembering his kindness, his willingness to help, his love for family, and the many moments that made him who he was. The birthdays, holidays, family gatherings, and everyday memories will continue to bring comfort and remind them of the special man they were blessed to have in their lives.
Rest peacefully, Merle. Thank you for the love you gave, the memories you created, and the example you set. You were loved more than words can say, and you will be missed more than words can express. Your family will carry your love in their hearts forever.
