Richard George Cherney

Funeral services for Richard Cherney, age 90, of Glenville, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  Rev. David Efflandt will officiate. Military honors will be accorded by the local servicemen’s organizations. Interment will be at Bohemian National Cemetery at a later date.  Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Richard died Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Thorne Crest Senior Living Community in Albert Lea

Richard George Cherney was born on May 19, 1926 in London Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota, the son of Ignace and Katherine (Cafourek) Cherney. He attended grades 1-8 at District #138, Schilling School and then grades 9-12 at Austin High School where he graduated in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946 with basic training in Camp Maxey, TX and service in occupied Japan, achieving the rank of Sergeant.  On October 19, 1947, Richard married Arlene Machacek in Albert Lea.  He was a farmer up until his retirement in 1991.  Richard was a member of the American Legion, the Elks, and the London Card Club.  He was on the Glenville School Board from 1960 to 1970.  He enjoyed hunting elk and deer, fishing, and watching the Minnesota Twins.  In 1993, Richard spent the summer in Alaska and from 1994 until 2012 he spent winters in Arizona.

Richard is survived by his wife, Arlene; daughters, Susan Cherney, Nancy (David) Decker, Joanne (Doug) Tunnyhill, Karen (Paul) Hansen, Sarah (Jim Matteson) Cherney; 13 grandchildren, Veronica Berlinski, Gretchen Pike, Matthew Decker, Scott Decker, Johnna and Hannah Tunnyhill, Kate Brossard, Ellen Reys, Jacob and Peter Hansen, Emma and Madeline Cherney, and Joseph Matteson; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Eugene Cherney and Ignace Cherney, Jr.; and sisters, Carol Gaylord and Kay Traverse.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ernest Cherney; daughter, Elaine Wallen; step-brothers, Marcus and Eugene Wichmann; grandson, Kyle Decker; and granddaughter, Theresa Rebello.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or donor’s choice
