Richard “Dick” Allen Osmundson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, peacefully passed away after a short, courageous battle with lung cancer on Friday, October 23, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Methodist Hospital in Rochester. He was 73 years old.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Bayview Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, MN, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor Ryan Stevenson-Cosgrove will be officiating. Burial will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery in Albert Lea.
Richard was born on April 11, 1953, in Albert Lea, Minnesota, to Norman and Marion (Diedrich) Osmundson. He was the middle child of seven. Dick’s faith was important to him, and he credited his family for laying that foundation. He prayed daily, attended Catholic school, and graduated from Albert Lea High School. In his youth, he excelled at hockey and participated in many softball and baseball leagues during the summer, often moving from one park to another. He met Deloris “Dee” Erickson, the love of his life, through a mutual friend, and their friendship grew into a relationship during their school years. They were married on May 19, 1973, at a Lutheran church. Shortly after, Dick joined and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Together, they were blessed with two daughters, Nikki and Jennifer. The family enjoyed many camping trips, often staying in a green canvas tent, and created lasting memories visiting National Parks, especially Yellowstone. Each anniversary, Dick and Dee spent time together in a cabin by Duluth. Dick worked as a carpenter building homes before spending over thirty years in manufacturing at Streater. He was a strong man who took pride in working with his hands, building an addition, a garage, and a deck for his home. He enjoyed helping his daughters with their house projects. Dick was known for his dry sense of humor, which his family appreciated. He had a fondness for chocolate chip cookies, and Dee often baked double batches to satisfy his sweet tooth. He enjoyed sharing cookies with his grandchildren, sometimes joking with them when they took his treats. Dick also enjoyed a midnight snack of cookies with milk or coffee. He spent time hunting, fishing, and bow hunting, and had a deep appreciation for wildlife. Dick and Dee often rode their motorcycle around the area, observing nature and the community. He enjoyed sitting on their porch overlooking the lake or reading mystery books. Dick was proud of his family and cherished time with his grandchildren, whether attending their activities or hosting overnight visits. He will be remembered as a stoic man whose smile could light up a room.
Dick is survived by his wife of 53 years Dee Osmundson; daughters: Nikki (Mike) Schmidt and Jennifer (Dominic) Hayes; grandchildren: Kayla (Aiden), Haylee and Abby Schmidt, Damion and Jemma Hayes; siblings: Jo (Bruce) Carr, Bill (Bev) Osmundson, Mary (Rod) Tharaldson, Tim (Terry) Osmundson, and Bob Osmundson; sister-in-law Jean Osmundson and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Tom Osmundson.
