Robert "Bob" Kelly

August 9, 1952 — April 28, 2025

Albert Lea

Robert “Bob” Patrick Kelly died peacefully at home on April 28th due to complications resulting from a terrible fall about ten months ago, which left him with permanent paralysis from the neck down. In spite of this tragic accident, he handled the situation with his usual courage, optimism and grace.

On August 9, 1952 Bob became the youngest of the four children born to (Mary) Dorothy and Robert Joseph Kelly of Albert Lea. Bob attended St. Theodore’s and St. Mary’s Catholic schools, and graduated from Albert Lea High School. He enjoyed football, softball, tennis and many other sports and was good at most everything. Hunting and fishing were favorite lifelong activities. He raced motocross, winning many trophies including the Minnesota State Champion. Eventually, he had a ranch near Watkins, MN where he raised horses and engaged in numerous horse competitions, excelling there too with many trophies and awards.

Diverse in his musical preferences- ‘70s and ‘80s rock, jazz, blues and country; Bob was also an excellent drummer and singer, playing in many bands, including the D.C. Drifters. In 2023, he was inducted into the Buddy Holly Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Bob was a salesman most of his life in different capacities-a dynamic and charismatic personality, generous, fair-minded and fun. Gregarious, always positive and talented; he was well liked by so many.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Bob is survived by his two sisters Mary Kay and Kathy; brother Michael (Mick), and his spouse Sharon; daughter Alex, and grandchild Hazel. Bob is also survived by Marge, his partner in recent years, who cared for him after the accident.

He will be truly missed, but his spirit will live in everyone who knew him.

A memorial and Celebration of Life will occur later this spring, and will be announced.
