Memorial services for Sadie Sophie (Shargent) Flattum, age 77, of Albert Lea, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home.  Rev. Janet White will officiate. Interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery at a later date.  Friends may greet the family beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday. 

Sadie passed away surrounded by her family Saturday, February 17, 2018.

Sadie was born on January 6, 1941 to Thomas and Eleonore Shargent in LeSeuer, Minnesota.  Sadie grew up in Waseca and graduated from Waseca High School. She married George Flattum on September 5, 1959 in Mason City, IA. After their marriage the couple lived in the Waseca and Albert Lea area. Sadie was a long time employee of Wilson’s Meat Packing and was employed by Shopko from the time of their opening in Albert Lea until her retirement in 2000. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed going to Wednesday services with her friends.  She also loved cheering on the MN “Twinkies” and MN Vikings, but if they were not playing she could be found watching any other MN sports or the food network. She loved trying a new recipe, sharing recipes, and looking for new items at the grocery store. Sadie spent a lot of time volunteering at St. John’s Lutheran Home after George’s death and was very proud of her Volunteer of the Year award in 2010. She cherished the many friendships she made in her last 9 years volunteering there. She enjoyed coffee dates and birthday club with her girlfriends. She also loved keeping track of her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.

Sadie is survived by her children, Kelly (Nancy) Flattum of Waseca, John (Mary) Flattum of Waseca, Terri Marpe of Albert Lea, Michael (Therese) Flattum of Lakeville, and Jeffrey (Crystal) Flattum of Mound; her grandchildren, Melaina (Josh Coppersmith) Flattum, Brooke (Nick) Howe, Jordan (Molly Gust), Cory Flattum, Jennifer (Isaiah) Prescott, Nicole (Brad) Edwards, Mollie (Jordan Jacobson) Hernandez, Andrew Hernandez, Samantha Flattum, Derek Flattum, Noah Hill, Maxwell Brecke, and Emily Flattum. Eight Great-Grandchildren, Mya, Mason, Landon, Lillian, Ryker, Harper, Xander, and Baby Edwards; siblings, Lu (Dennis) Friesenborg, Lyle (Ivena) Shargent; in-laws, Art (Debbie) Flattum, Ralph Sabin.

Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents, Thomas and Eleonore Shargent; siblings, Trudie (Alfred) Jensen and Alan Shargent; George’s parents, John and Anna Flattum; brothers and sisters-in-law, Orville Flattum, Carl Flattum, Josephine and Harold Sherwood, and Gladys Sabin.
