Stanley A. Espeland, 78 years young, died at Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea on Friday, May 8, 2020. A private family memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2020 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home, Albert Lea, MN. Interment will be at West Cemetery in Rake, IA at 1:00 p.m. on May 15, 2020.
Stanley Ardell Espeland was born on March 3, 1942 in Rake, IA to Sam and Josie Espeland on the family farm. Stanley graduated from Rake High School in 1960 where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Stan was in the United States Army, serving his country honorably from 1964 to 1968. He was involved in the trucking industry for his entire life, retiring from Consolidated Freightways in 1998. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 120.
On May 8, 1971, Stan married Susan Haugen. The couple was blessed with two sons; Steven and Jeffrey. They lived around the East Bethel and North Branch areas until moving to Albert Lea in 2014 to be closer to family. Stan and Susan enjoyed many years at their camper near Cameron, WI and made many good friends sitting around the campfire. Stan enjoyed fishing on the pontoon, visiting with friends, and relaxing! He loved spending time with his grandchildren!
Stan is survived by his wife of 49 years, Susan; sons, Steven (Angie) Espeland and Jeffrey Espeland; and grandchildren, Carissa, Brittni, Abby, and Jace.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Josie; siblings, Jean Canterbury, Ruth Pederson, Janice Espeland, and Lynn Espeland; father-in-law, Delmar Haugen; and brother-in-law, Duane Elwood.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Burial will be held at West Cemetery in Rake, IA at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2020.
