Steven Doulas Seeger, 80, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the Good Samaritan Campus in Albert Lea, MN. A memorial service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Chapel in Albert Lea. Pastor Kent Otterman will be officiating.
Steven Douglas Seeger was born May 3rd, 1945, the second son and third child of Wesley and Cora Seeger. Steven died on November 12 following a brief hospitalization at Mayo in Rochester, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and older sister. He is survived by Rod, his older brother. His early years as a child were commandeered when he contracted polio at the age of four. He spent thirteen weeks at Sister Kenney Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he was cared for in the polio section of the hospital. Following his hospitalization, he returned home where he had a daily regimen of exercises with his mom serving as the physical therapist. The residual paralysis of his right arm and hand limited him, and the weakening of his legs affected his mobility.
Steven graduated from Albert Lea High School. Because of his physical limitations he had a challenging time securing a job. He found an occasional job which did not require using two hands. These were hard to find. One job he did enjoy and was well liked by the customers was working as a greeter at Walmart. He was located at the entrance to the store and welcomed people who were coming to shop. He often would come to work with a pocket of candy and would hand out a piece of candy to people as they arrived. He got the nick name “Candy Man” from some of the regular customers.
In the last 35 years of his life Steven found attending 12 Step programs served him well. For one 12 Step program he was in charge of making the coffee for the evening meeting. He took the task seriously and made sure the coffee was ready when the meeting began. For a number of years he also was active in helping plan the New Years Eve dance that was held at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. His involvement gave Steven an opportunity to be with friends at fun activities and remain clean and sober. Earlier this year he received a plaque celebrating 34 years of sobriety. He was very pleased with that accomplishment.
Steven took up residence at Good Samaritan Center in Albert Lea in September 2021 with post-polio syndrome. He could no longer take care of himself and needed to be in a skilled nursing facility. During the time there he was regularly engaged in playing bingo. He also was part of a foursome which played cards. When it came time to celebrate his birthday there, he planned to have a pizza party! A group of approximately twelve friends who were also at Good Samaritan celebrated at his pizza birthday party. It went well and pizza parties would happen every so often with 10 – 12 people joining in the pizza dinner.
Steven will be missed. He had a good sense of humor and loved to joke with others. When traveling down the halls in his wheelchair he enjoyed sharing jokes with others and to carry on friendly conversations in the hallways. He loved to share his candy with others.
Donations in his memory may be made to Good Samaritan Center.
The service will be live-streamed, and can be viewed at the Bayview/Freeborn Facebook page at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/share/1TWTYzd96C/
